Misean Cara is seeking a suitable candidate for the position of Financial Officer. Reporting to the Financial Controller, the Finance Officer will assist the Financial Controller in the execution of key finance duties and develop effective working relationships with Misean Cara teams and members.
Founded in 2004, Misean Cara is a faith based organisation of 89 congregations who are committed to working with and for the marginalized and most vulnerable people in the developing world. Our annual budget is €16 million. Our members live and work with marginalized communities in the areas of education, healthcare including HIV/AIDs, community development, income generation, water and sanitation, the environment and human rights. Our purpose is to be in solidarity with the poor in ways that transform lives while respecting the integrity of local cultures.
Our 4 year Strategic Plan 2013-2016 sets out our priorities and includes:
To support initiatives that address the structural causes of poverty, vulnerability and marginalisation;
To focus funding on work that makes a significant positive difference to the lives of the poor, vulnerable and marginalised;
To provide capacity building and organisational development support to assist member organisations and their partners to deliver high quality development work;
To enhance Misean Cara systems, processes, governance and internal communications to ensure results are achieved consistently and in a cost effective manner;
To augment risk management systems and processes by enhancing oversight through a greater focus on monitoring, evaluation and audits;
To ensure that development results are demonstrated and communicated in ways that assure that the partner contribution and value of missionary development work is recognised within the development sector and by the public.
Position Summary: Finance Officer
Reporting to the Financial Controller, the Finance Officer will assist the Financial Controller in the execution of key finance duties and develop effective working relationships with Misean Cara teams and members.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare monthly management accounts with variance analysis and KPI reporting;
Management and development of the SAGE accounting system;
Integration of reporting systems and automation of other manual processes;
Prepare the monthly payroll and file all forms and taxes;
Prepare financial accounts and assist in the audit process;
Prepare bank reconciliations for review by Financial Controller;
Provide input into the preparation of the annual financial statements;
Assist the financial controller with the preparation of the financial statements and the annual report;
Assist the financial controller in the preparation of financial information for donor reporting;
Liaise with auditors and donors in relation to financial information under the guidance of the Financial Controller;
Prepare all filings with the CRA and CRA to ensure compliance with legislative obligations;
Support other sections of the organisation in financial matters; and
Secure value in use of resources.
Project reporting
Conduct internal financial reviews of Misean Cara funded projects in the field;
Assist the financial controller in ensuring oversight of Misean Cara Project funding, including preparation of management reports on project funding;
Responsible for preparing financial transfers to partners;
Review of financial aspects of project reports and provide recommendations for follow up to project officers;
Maintain the finance procedures manual for partners;
Work with and support Funding and Learning and Development (including monitoring and auditing of projects) functions to ensure financial standards are met in applications, reports and monitoring practice;
General knowledge of compliance with relevant donor guidelines in relation to reporting;
Act as the main financial contact and support for field projects, ensuring all Misean Cara reporting requirements and deadlines are adhered to;
Prepare interim and final financial reports as per donor requirements; and
Any other duties as assigned by the CEO or Board.
Essential skills and attributes:
A recognised professional qualification in accountancy;
Experience in the NGO/charity sector post qualification, an advantage;
Experience of developing financial systems and implementing best practice;
Passion for the benefits of technology in the finance function, striving for continuous improvement;
Strong communication, relationship management and interpersonal skills;
High degree of analytical, conceptual and problem-solving skills;
The role will involve regular travel to member projects overseas in developing countries;
Respects the ethos of faith-based organisations;
Excellent knowledge of MS Excel ( Intermediate to Advanced); and
Proficiency in SAGE accounting package.
The post is offered on the following terms:
A 2-year contract basis:
Salary range €42,000 – €51,000 on qualifications and experience;
42 hour work-week; and
9 months’ probation.
