OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The Communications Manager is responsible for driving Amnesty International Ireland’s communications strategy. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the successful candidate will provide strategic leadership in planning, content development, maintaining excellent media relations and taking the lead in the development, delivery and day-to-day management of the organisation’s communications function.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Leading on the development and implementation of the organisation’s communications strategy.
Overall responsibility for managing the Amnesty International brand in media work, design and content of web and for a consistency of design/branding across all Section publications.
Leading on production and adaptation of campaigns material and communication of all relevant Section material.
Liaising with the international movement in the development of international communications and the development of communications priorities for the Section.
Developing, managing and executing the organisation’s digital strategy, including:
Working with key stakeholders, integrating digital media into our advocacy, campaigning and fundraising communications;
Developing and managing the organisation’s social media strategy;
Managing the setting and maintaining of style, language templates, image usage and design guidelines for www.amnesty.ie;
Researching and evaluating current trends to identify new opportunities in the web space;
Managing and liaising with the AI web administrator on the development and maintenance of www.amnesty.ie.
Developing communication plans for crises scenarios.
Managing the monitoring of media and analysing media coverage.
Monitoring Weekly Media Reports from International Secretariat and managing the mapping of media opportunities.
Drafting and proofreading press releases and other media and communications content.
Managing existing and developing new relationships with media and other stakeholders.
Acting as spokesperson as required.
Managing the communication budget.
Contributing to the overall management and decision making in the Section as a member of the management team.
Adherence to the line managers’ responsibilities for health and safety as laid out in the Irish Section safety statement.
Monitoring and evaluating the impact and effectiveness of AI communications and media work.
Ideally, the successful candidate will have:
Proven experience in a senior communications role with a national or international organisation;
Knowledge and understanding of all sectors of the media in Ireland;
Experience in the NGO and/or the public sector;
Evidence of an ability to develop innovative new communications strategies and approaches;
Proven ability in strategic media planning and evaluation;
Excellent writing and communication skills;
Thorough knowledge of current and emerging digital technologies and trends;
Strong knowledge of social media channels;
Excellent IT skills, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Suite, Constant Contact/Mailchimp and WordPress or other content management systems;
Previous experience in managing and motivating people, including knowledge of performance management systems and familiarity with best practice in managing people;
Background in managing budgets and experience in strategic planning;
Ability to manage multiple priorities and work to deadlines;
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with a wide range of audiences;
Demonstrated experience in a representational or spokesperson role;
Knowledge and understanding of the goals and aims of Amnesty International;
Flexibility in working hours, i.e. occasional evening and weekend work required.
The salary for this full-time permanent position of 35 hours per week is approximately €48,000-55,000 per annum , depending upon experience.
