Care / Support Assistants – Cork Simon Community

Cork Simon Community works in solidarity with men and women who are homeless in Cork, offering housing and support in their journey back to independent living. We promote a socially just society and campaign for a society without homelessness.

Cork Simon Community are currently recruiting for the following posts:

Care & Support Assistant (Polish speaker) – Fixed Term Contract until 13 September 2015, 27 hours per week
Care & Support Assistant (Polish speaker) – Permanent Contract, 20 hours per week

Role Objective: Provide emergency accommodation in a safe and supportive environment for homeless people.  Support Team Leaders and Project Workers to implement care plans and promotion of independent living skills aimed at motivating people to move on to more appropriate accommodation.

Key tasks include:

On first contact identify immediate need and refer to other services where appropriate.
Provide bed space in appropriate accommodation based on initial assessment / referral from other projects.
Carry out Health and Safety checks and follow relevant procedures.
Provide for personal hygiene / showers, clean clothes, laundry, meals, clean rooms to a high standard.
Assist in implementing a programme of social activities as organised by or with residents and people using services as appropriate
Assist Team Leaders and Project Workers with the implementation of agreed care plans with residents, especially residents from Eastern/Central Europe
Act as an advocate when appropriate
Support residents from Eastern/Central Europe with the Habitual Residence Condition (HRC) application/appeals process

The ideal candidate for this post will:

Have fluency in the Polish language. Fluency in another Eastern/Central European language is desirable
Have previous experience in a care setting
Have strong communication and interpersonal skills
Have the ability to motivate and empower people
Have a knowledge of homelessness
Have a knowledge of Mental Health, Drugs and Alcohol issues and the range of responses
Have excellent numeric and written skills
