NCBI, the national sight loss agency, is a not for profit charitable organisation which provides support and services nationwide to people experiencing sight loss. We also provide a range of services to public and private organisations to make sure that their services are accessible to people who are blind and vision impaired.

NCBI Services currently has a vacancy for a:

Centre Assistant – Athlone

33 hours per week

The successful applicant will be based in NCBI Services Regional Office in Athlone. Candidates must have a relevant qualification in social care, community development, social science or a related third level qualification. Experience of working with people with disabilities along with experience in office procedures is desirable. Applicants should possess excellent computer skills and an ability to work on their own initiative.

Full clean driving license while not essential would be an advantage.

Starting salary €19,049 per annum for a 33 hour week.  Salary scale for full time worker (37 hour week) €21,358-35,659.81 per annum pro rata for 33 hour week.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Centre Assistant

Duties:

To support centre staff and service users with activities as requested by the Regional Manager, including canteen / reception duties as and when needed.
To contribute to the planning and development of services in the centre.
To facilitate groups in the centre
To support and guide service users while in the centre.
To implement certain aspects of day-to-day programmes carried out within the centre, either as day trips or breaks away with people who attend the centre.
To coordinate and participate fully in activities that take place away from the centre.
To liaise with the Regional Manager as required and keep him/her informed of all matters concerning the centre.
To assist the Regional Manager in the administration of the centre including: timetabling, maintenance of records and filing systems, dealing with telephone queries and post.
To alert the manager to all maintenance issues, housekeeping and general upkeep of the centre and its facilities.
To co-ordinate and maintain transport rosters and liaise with drivers in order to support people accessing the centre.
To operate as an effective team member and work collaboratively with centre staff and other NCBI Services staff as required.
To participate in meetings, and attend in-house and other training as recommended by the Regional Manager.
To assist in the monitoring and evaluation of services.
To adhere to all policies and practices of the organisation as applicable to the delivery of services to people with sight loss, their advocates and families.
To coordinate training in the centre
To manage the equipment shop in the centre
To coordinate the low vision service in the centre
To provide a front line customer service
To carry out other duties which may arise from time to time, if requested by the Regional Manager.
To alert the Regional Manager to any potential health and safety issues.

Essential Requirements

have a qualification in social care, community development, social science or similar third level qualification
demonstrate an ability to support people in an individualised way based on the needs and requirements of each person attending the centre
show an ability to be flexible and adaptable
demonstrate a high level of organisational skills
have an ability to get on with people and participate in work related activities as part of a team

Desirable Requirements

have experience of working with people who experience disability and demonstrate an understanding of the issues that people who have impaired vision live with in day to day life
have a proven track record in carrying out administrative tasks to an appropriate level for the work required in the centre.
