The Labour Party under the Leadership of Joan Burton, T.D., is seeking to appoint a new General Secretary. The General Secretary is the Chief Operating Officer of the Party, providing strategic and operational advice and practical support including planning and evaluation and high level communications, under the direction of the Party Leader.
A knowledge of the Labour Party is essential, as is a genuine commitment to advancing social democracy. The successful candidate will have proven management and organisational experience, as well as a sound knowledge of the political scene at home and abroad.
The successful candidate must be prepared to work unsocial hours, with a small but enthusiastic staff, and generally be willing to accept the pressures of serving a vigorous political party.
An ability to relate to the membership of the Labour Party is also essential.

Description of Role
The General Secretary is responsible for:
the management and control of Head Office, the Party’s organisation and administrative affairs and its general development and expansion, based on specific objectives and outcomes;
the management of the Party’s finances, including all compliance issues relating to the Standards in Public Office Commission (SIPO), and the Register of Political Parties;
Ensuring that the register of members and branches is maintained in accordance with the provisions of the Data Protection Act;
providing an effective staff management function to the organisation;
working as part of the Senior Management Team to provide professional support services to Party Members, Parliamentary Party, Central Council, Executive Board, candidates and the organisation as a whole;
working as part of the Election Campaign Team to prepare strategy and implement election plans;
the organisation of events such as the Party’s National Conference;
the implementation of decision of the Party Conference, Parliamentary Party, Central Council and Executive Board;
As guardian of the constitution of the Labour Party, it is an essential requirement of the position of General Secretary that the person so appointed fully subscribes to the values and objectives as set out in the Labour Party Constitution.
