Life Skills Tutor – Irish Wheelchair Association

Overall Purpose of Job
To plan, deliver and evaluate life-skills training for people with physical disabilities and / or acquired brain injury within Irish Wheelchair Association’s Rehabilitative Training programme. To support and motivate people to develop the skills and aptitudes needed to progress towards increased personal effectiveness, confidence and independence; e.g. participating in their community, moving onwards towards further educational opportunities, or improving job readiness.

You will work with people through both group workshops and one-to-one facilitation to support them to develop new skills and to identify and work towards personal goals. This will involve a combination of both QQI-accredited and informal training based in IWA, and also the wider community.

Liaison
You will work as part of a team collaborating with the RT Liaison Officer and Programme Assistants, as well as with staff from other IWA services, and RT programmes. You will develop links with community organisations and services to provide a diverse range of community-based learning opportunities for Rehabilitative Training participants.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
To plan and deliver bespoke training sessions to people with physical disabilities as part of IWA’s Rehabilitative Training Programme, including both QQI-accredited and informal training activities
To develop and maintain training materials and resources for use within various training modules
To direct programme assistants in supporting training activities and engaging participants in workshops and individual activities.
To deliver training consistent with required standards for participants to achieve QQI awards where relevant
To evaluate, improve and share training materials for the benefit of all IWA service users
To support individuals with one-to-one goal setting within IWA’s Individual Support Service
To work as part of a team to ensure the overall development of the RT programme in line with HSE’s New Directions implementation plans
To maintain records and information in line with Quality Assurance standards and to prepare materials for internal and external audit and verification processes
To perform such other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the RT Coordinator

PERSON SPECIFICATION
Training, Experience and Qualifications
QQI level 6 or higher in Occupational Therapy, Adult Education & Training/Guidance or similar educational or social science related discipline is required
A minimum of 2 years’ experience of training and facilitation in an informal/community setting is essential
Experience of one-to-one mentoring and/or occupational therapy work is desirable
Knowledge and Skills

Excellent presentation and group facilitation skills
Excellent administration skills, organisation and time management
Strong computer literacy including Microsoft Office suite
An ability to adapt basic or generic learning outcomes into bespoke practical training workshops and activities
An ability to develop and evaluate comprehensive programmes of training for ongoing use and to evaluate and update programmes
An ability to guide, advise and utilise programme assistants to support students in engaging fully during various training activities
Experience of working with people with physical disabilities or other marginalised groups is desirable
A working knowledge of administration requirements for QQI awards is desirable
