Purpose of Job:
The Volunteer Skills Development Officer is our main link with the more than 400 young people who contribute to the work of SpunOut.ie each year.

The Volunteer Skills Development Officer is specifically responsible for improving the skills of our volunteers to ensure they can better support their peers and foster greater digital creativity in young people generally, and for ensuring effective communication and support for our all our contributors.

The Volunteer Skills Development Officer will also work closely with the Executive Director and the rest of the team to further develop SpunOut.ie as a volunteer-led service.

The Volunteer Skills Development Officer will join SpunOut.ie at an exciting time for the organisation as we move into a new phase in our development. SpunOut.ie is well-placed to expand its impact and the successful candidate will be essential in facilitating this growth.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:
The Volunteer Skills Development Officer has responsibility over the following areas:

Developing volunteer induction and communication processes to keep volunteers engaged with the organisation in a structured and sustainable way
Designing and implementing a formal training and development programme for volunteers, supported by industry,
Putting in place appropriate mentoring and supervision processes to support volunteers
Developing a video ‘handbook’ to communicate essential information relating to the rights of our volunteers, the responsibilities of their roles and the general organisational structures and procedures that will affect them
Developing other guides and toolkits to support our volunteers in developing skills that enhance their contribution to the running of our service
Establishing appropriate mentoring and supervision support mechanisms for volunteers
Supporting volunteers to become digital peer supporters
Ensuring the work of our volunteers is always recognised by designing and implementing a new formal system for doing so
Developing a volunteer network and pathways to more structured engagement with the organisation
Ensuring better engagement with industry and sector partners, with a focus on developing key skills for digital content creation
Carrying out any other duties as may from time to time be required by the Executive Director
Skills and Attributes:

Qualifications:

A relevant third-level qualification or equivalent experience
At least three years’ experience working with young people

Youth Engagement:
Have experience of working closely with young people, preferably involving recruitment, management, training and support of young people
Knowledge of youth protection legislation and practice
An understanding and experience of the youth sector in Ireland
An interest in and understanding of youth health and social issues, and the internet as a tool for youth engagement
Preferably some experience organising events to engage with young people to inform, educate and inspire

People Development Skills:
Specialised experience of working with people to develop their skills in a structured, person-focused context
A good understanding of the challenges facing people in their personal, educational and social development
Experience of supporting people in articulating and achieving their own goals, either personal, educational or professional
Demonstrable experience of developing the skills of people, through both group and one-on-one formats
Experience working with people from a wide variety of backgrounds, ages and skills levels

Communications Experience:
A very high level of communication skills in the English language, both oral and written
A clear understanding of the skills needed to create effective and engaging online content
Preferably some experience with online content creation or promotion

Personal Skills:
The ideal candidate will:
Be a self-starter with strong organisational skills, with the capacity to prioritise and balance conflicting demands
Have strong interpersonal skills capable of building strong relationships and having an ability to influence others
Have a proven background in delivering on targets within agreed budgets and timeframes
Exhibit strong collaborative and team-working skills
Be tech-literate and have a keen attention to detail
