Roma Men’s Health Advocate – Integration and Support Unit

Role and responsibilities:
The Roma Men’s Health Advocate will be expected to work collaboratively with the Waterford Roma Health Advocate employed by the ISU to ensure the provision of co-ordinated supports to Roma community members in County Waterford.

Translation:
To provide translation services for identified Roma men where applicable
Advocacy Supports:
To provide personal advocacy supports to Roma men: including but not exclusive to GP visits, appointments, health, housing, education, childcare services, social welfare and other social services.
To support the Waterford Roma men to participate in the Atelier Roma Men’s Training Programme (a skills based, developmental programme with health and English language module) being run by Ucasadh, Ferrybank; and to liaise with course organisers re planning, delivery and evaluation of this programme.

Representation:
To participate and inform relevant local and community structures on Roma issues as directed by the interagency group
To support the development of internal leadership within the Roma community with a focus on human rights and equality
To communicate with relevant interagency group members about the issues and needs of the client group
To provide the interagency group with expertise and cultural knowledge insights that assist in supporting and raising awareness for and about the client group
To direct all requests by media / public representatives to the ISU Manager

Recording and Reporting:
To thoroughly and accurately record observations, information and issues arising (in line with Data Protection policies) so as to inform needs based responses, services and strategic actions
To adhere to the child protection policies of the ISU in line with Children’s First (2011) National Guidelines.
To meet with the other agencies in the interest of Roma men where required
To report to and liaise with the ISU Manager
To provide a weekly report summarising key tasks completed

Other:
To meet with the ISU Manager on a weekly basis and report on work undertaken
To attend interagency meetings when requested
To present a positive image of the project to all external agencies / persons
To maintain strict confidentiality when undertaking all aspects of work.
To be flexible in meeting the needs of the interagency group.

Qualifications and Education Requirements
Third Level Qualification in Social Care or equivalent
Excellent standard of written and verbal English and Romanian communication skills essential
Translation skills appropriate to working with Roma groups at a level they are appropriate with
Expertise and previous experience of working directly with marginalised or minority groups and representing same
Understanding and knowledge of Roma cultures, traditions and family kinships.

Ability to work on own initiative and to be a strong team player
Ability to link with relevant agencies when appropriate
Ability to work in partnership with key others and maintain appropriate boundaries
Ability to adhere to organisational policies such as child protection, human resources and international code of ethics when working with vulnerable clients
Ability to adhere to strict confidentiality codes of best practice
Have an awareness of and openness to knowledge of diverse cultural issues

Desirable qualities:
Self-motivated, enthusiastic, involved, committed and passionate about the work
Honest, responsible and reliable
Must have own transport and full clean driver’s license.
